This is the hero from Geoffrey Chaucer’s "The Nun’s Priest’s Tale". Chauntecleer was a wonderful crower who sounded better than any other cock. He was also a beautiful bird, brightly coloured and well kept.
As Chauntecleer balances on one foot his body swerves as he shifts in another direction. Ever alert for the appearance of the fox, he takes charge of his seven hens. His favourite, of course, is the very pretty Pertelote and he has loved her since she was only seven days old.
